England Coast Path Part 26 Rochford to Hockley

It's another beautiful day & after a very satisfying premier inn breakfast we pay a massive £4.00 for just under 24 hours parking, great result 👍

Frost on the car a cold sunny day we drive to Rochford station, park up & start our walk.

Rochford to Hockley

Distance 16:68 Miles

Time 05:51:06 Hours

Elevation gain 202 Feet

Leaving Rochford station passing through a residential area then out into fields & shortly along side the northern bank or the river Roach.

The tide is out & the thick gooey mud like a scene from a Dickens book is glistening in the sun, ice visible in the water of the rivulets.

The miles pass & we come to the end of the path along the river Roach & start to traverse farmland leading to the banks of the river Crouch.

A beautiful blue sky with wispy clouds over head & an interesting surface under foot a road way made up of cockle shells.  A nice walking surface crunchy as the shells crack.

Passing the ends small tributaries of the river Roach like thin witches fingers feeling the land we pass Wallasea island & come along side the river Crouch.

Unfortunlly along all the rivers there has been an abundance of rubbish & the Roach & the Crouch are no exception.

Mile after mile we walk along side the river Crouch, The tide is coming in with the water lapping the shore with a thin foamy edge of sea foam.

The grass path turns to a concrete surface which is sloping down to the left with no option but to walk on it.
Looking back, a path well trod

Bag carrying all part of the service!

The path turns back to grass a few more miles pass we pass fishermen using the incoming tide in their quest to catch a fish or two.

Not for now we turn off the path to catch a bus back to Rochford negotiating some very unclearly marked paths across more farmland, once we do get to the bus stop it's luckily only a seven minute wait for the bus.
After a long walk it's just a few hundred meters to the station carpark & the car another very productive walking day. It's been a challenge for Lesley as she has had no voice for both days walking & is presenting with a cold so she has had an even greater challenge, so hat's off to her for her determination to walk when not feeling 100% great.

England Coast Path Part 25 Southend on sea to Rochford

Southend on sea to Rochford

Distance 11:97 Miles

Elevation gain 131 Feet

Time 04:04:02 Hours

So after an early morning drive down from Surrey through the Dartford river crossing tunnel we are back in south end on sea to continue our walk around the coast of Britain.

Tonight we are staying in the premier inn so take a chance & cheekily park in their car park which is also our walk starting point hoping that we will not be fined for over staying. Fingers crossed off we go leaving the car & heading out along the sea front.

Its a cold crisp morning with a keen wind blowing along the sea front we pause for a moment to take our customary selfie.

We follow the sea front for several miles to Shoeburyness passing beach huts some raised up on stilts on the beach & some on the promenade. At Shoeburyness the path turns inland past Shoeburyness Garrison.

It's not long after the Garrison that the path turns away from the sea front inland down past some very exclusive property.

The old Hospital A.D.1856

The route appears to head inland but this is due the river Roach & the river Crouch giving us a long walk around the fingers of the estuary's as they head inland.

So we are heading towards our first river the river Roach through some old villages & past some churches with their spires looking like party hats popped on top, a feature of the churches in the area.

Spotted in a front yard of a house
An old British railway articulated truck

Through vast open farmland where the cold wind is biting but blowing us along, the Daffodil's dancing in the wind.

We arrive at Rochford railway station to find it is a railway bus replacement service but only a short time to wait. Soon back at South end Victoria station its about a mile back to our Premier inn. Stopping in town at the J.D Weatherspoon's pub the Last post quick pint & a bite to eat then we are done for the day.

Check in is swift & we are in a nice warm 4th floor room with great sea views, all be it with safety netting.
